Facebook Users are Still Uncomfortable with Timeline

Facebook’s new Timeline has been around for about six months now, and people are still having a negative reaction to some of the features. For example, 88{7e4ee7cd997d36f6dec43befd6b19c37edf0959bbf61766e988f901dd91e96d7} of users are concerned about the privacy of the information that’s included on their Facebook profiles because of Timeline’s ability to track a person or company all the way to birth.

Webroot’s survey included over 1,600 Internet users, ages 18 and up, in many parts of the world. The most overwhelming responses among survey participants were complaints about how Timeline is not optional and has a mandatory automatic opt-in.

However, half of the people who lodged complaints about Facebook’s new Timeline haven’t actually taken any action to privatize their information. Facebook allows a user to change their privacy settings so that information that a user doesn’t want to share with the public is hidden. The new security settings even allow a user to hide information from specific friends and relatives.

Some people did take action and adjusted their Facebook activities and information displayed on Timeline: around 17{7e4ee7cd997d36f6dec43befd6b19c37edf0959bbf61766e988f901dd91e96d7} deleted posts, statuses, and pictures. Most of the people who did delete and hide information did so because they “didn’t want a prospective employer or current employer to see what they did on Facebook”.

The people who participated in the survey weren’t just concerned with Facebook’s privacy settings, however. Over 80{7e4ee7cd997d36f6dec43befd6b19c37edf0959bbf61766e988f901dd91e96d7} were also concerned with privacy of information on their Google accounts, which often contain data like addresses, names, and phone numbers.

Even though users are still having issues with Timeline, businesses are thriving. Many large businesses such as Target and Honda are reporting growth in user engagement, and even small businesses are benefitting from Timeline.
